Lot 4811
Constantine I, 307/310-337. Follis (Bronze, 18 mm, 3.41 g), a contemporary imitation of an issue from Thessalonica, irregular mint, after 318. Helmeted and cuirassed bust of Constantine I to left; around, imitative legend formed out of sixteen Π. Rev. Cluster of stars around central pellet-in-annulet; all within stylized wreath. Somewhat rough and with light deposits, otherwise, very fine.

From the collection of Dr. L. Ramskold, ex Elsen 90, 9 December 2006, 348.

This contemporary 'barbarous' imitation copies a Thessalonica emission of 318-319, but is almost celticized in style. For both dies, the legends have been produced with punche, an angled C for the obverse, and a star for the reverse. To produce different sized stars on the reverse the punch was struck with varying amounts of force.
